FIBROMYALGIA symptoms include pain across the body and difficulty sleeping. Treatment for the condition focuses on managing painful symptoms, through medication, diet and lifestyle changes. Eating this £7 supplement in your diet could help you slash the pain.

Fibromyalgia symptoms can be triggered by a lack of sleep or a traumatic event, such as an injury or death of a loved one.

Signs that someone has the condition include pain across the body and difficulty sleeping.

Pain points are a good way to test for fibromyalgia, and may appear in five different locations across a person’s body if they have the condition.

Treatment tends to focus on reducing painful symptoms, through changes to diet and lifestyle.

Adding ribose supplements to your diet could reduce painful symptoms, according to Dr Sarah Brewer at

“Ribose is a sugar which forms part of the backbone of ribonucleic acid, the strands of genetic material which distribute the code needed for protein synthesis in cells,” she writes on her website.

“Taking ribose increases cellular energy synthesis in heart and skeletal muscles, and is used in the medical treatment of conditions associated with impaired energy metabolism such as chronic heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

“A study involving 41 people with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue assessed the effects of taking ribose at a dose of 5g, three times a day, for around 18 days.

“Taking ribose significantly improved energy levels, sleep, mental clarity, well-being and reduced pain intensity.”

You can buy ribose supplements for £7 in some UK supermarkets.

Dr Axe, a US-based clinical nutritionist, also recommends ribose to help treat pain symptoms.

“Research indicates that taking a ribose supplement may help to improve sleep, improve energy levels, improve your sense of well-being and decrease pain for those diagnosed with fibromyalgia.”

A small study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, where participants were given five grams of ribose a day, found that 66 per cent of patients experienced a significant improvement in their symptoms.

Ribose can also help to lower blood sugar levels, helping people with diabetes.

Everyday Health, based in the US, also considers ribose to be a great way of reducing painful fibromyalgia symptoms.

You could also reduce symptoms by continuing to exercise and having a massage, among other methods.

Dr Roger Henderson, a GP in Shropshire, advised how sufferers can manage the condition by sharing his four top tips on alleviating symptoms.

The NHS adds on its website that “simple painkillers that are available over the counter from a pharmacy, such as paracetamol, can sometimes help relieve the pain associated with fibromyalgia.”

“However, these aren’t suitable for everyone, so make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions that come with the medication before using them.”
